Virgin Mobile is mobile operator owned by Virgin Media and the world’s first MVNO. It has been providing services since 1999 when it was founded as a joint venture of T-Mobile and the Virgin Group. In 2004 this MVNO became solely owned by the Virgin Group. Virgin Media is also the first company to offer quadplay services: landline, mobile phone, broadband and TV.
As a virtual operator it has not got its own network infrastructure and up until 2011 it used T-Mobile’s infrastructure. Currently due to the merger of T-Mobile and Orange into Everything Everywhere it Virgin customers can benefit from combined mobile coverage of those two operators.
In the beginning Virgin Mobile offered only pay as you go services but for several years it has been also successfully sold monthly contracts. PAYG tariffs available on Virgin include Big Data & Texts, Big Talk, The Addict Tariff and a special tariff for customers that benefit from quadplay, which is known as The Simply 8p tariff. Rates for texts, calls and voicemail on The Simply 8p are 8p per minute/text while international texts and calls are 16p.
